Who we are and what we do

Thinkbox is the marketing body for commercial TV in the UK, in all its forms. Its shareholders are Channel 4, Five, GMTV, ITV, Sky Media, Turner Media Innovations and Viacom who represent over 90% of commercial TV advertising revenue through their owned and partner TV channels. Thinkbox works with the marketing community with a single ambition: to help advertisers get the best out of today's TV. Thinkbox was launched in February 2005.

TV today has more to offer advertisers than ever before, not least because this growing medium remains at the heart of popular culture and advertising effectiveness. From understanding how audiences engage with TV advertising, explaining innovative and affordable solutions, to providing the rigorous proof of effectiveness that advertisers need, Thinkbox is here to help customers meet their marketing objectives.

Our structure

Tess Alps, Thinkbox's CEO is on a mission to help advertisers and agencies get more out of the amazing medium of Television. To help her do this she is supported by a research & strategy department and a marketing team. Here's the top line on what each of them do.

Research and Strategy

David Brennan's team is responsible for research, strategy, presentations and planning.

Research
Developing groundbreaking new research to help advertisers understand exactly how advertising works is central to Thinkbox's task. In 2007, Thinkbox undertook a raft of major research initiatives with respected partners which cast new light on a range of unexplored areas.

Three major projects were undertaken: an Engagement Study, which examined how consumers really engage with TV ads; a Payback Study with PricewaterhouseCoopers which, for the first time, revealed the impact of TV advertising on long term sales and brand equity; and a study into Generation Whatever, which focussed on the lives of young people to uncover the truth about their media consumption, as opposed to the hype and hysteria.

Planning
Our Planning team is responsible for liaison between our shareholders, advertisers and media agencies. In addition, we can provide information on all issues to do with television and TV advertising and our advice is free, expert and confidential. The team runs a series of training courses throughout the year. These 'Introduction to Television' workshops are very popular amongst new starters to our industry, particularly those with a media role.

Thinkbox is dedicated to proving advertising effectiveness, and part of our mission is to seek out and commission inspiring and effective ad campaigns for our ever-growing library of case studies. Planning look after this too.

Thinkbox is involved in a number of high-profile industry sponsorships and strategic partnerships that support advertising effectiveness, creative excellence and effective innovation. Events
Thinkbox host a rolling programme of free inspirational events, all designed to help people understand how to get the best of TV. These feature well-known industry luminaries and focus on specific areas of interest to advertisers – often showcasing the latest Thinkbox research.

Over the last year we heard from a truly stellar collection of speakers and explored a wide range of TV topics; including, engagement with advertising, how it pays back, liberating technology, young people and TV and the fascinating TV and the brain. With a brand spanking new look, loads of great new a/v content and much improved functionality and navigation, our new website aims to be a one-stop-shop window into the world of TV advertising and is home to a treasure trove of new and updated content to inspire and inform agencies and advertisers. It has been designed to help people understand and navigate the world of TV and get the very best out of it – whether that's the unsurpassed clout of broadcast TV, the depth and value offered by interactive services or the opportunities offered by emerging technologies. We've put together a quick guide as to what's new and how to get the most out of our site, and you can read that here.

Films and publishing
Throughout the year the content team is also produces a wide variety of films, many of which you can see on this website, at our events or presentations. With the help of many of our industry's brightest luminaries our films are designed to inspire and inform; to explore the subjects that are of most interest to advertisers and also to celebrate the very best of effectiveness and creativity. We hope you like them!

Newsletters
We also produce a monthly e-newsletter, "Thinkbox in your Inbox", which keeps our registered website users up-to-date with the latest news from TV, including new case studies and details of our up-and coming events. Please do register for these useful updates if you haven't already. Registration will also set you up nicely to access some of the content we have to keep behind closed doors on our site. We've got plenty of great material coming up and it's well worth having your own log in.

Trade Marketing
We produce advertising to both promote our research initiatives, strategic partnerships and sponsorships.

PR and Editorial
We work closely with the media to ensure they are bang up to date with the latest developments and insight into TV advertising.
